Poster Drafts

The poster designs we have edited so far have been from each of the strongest scenes in the short film. We have decided to do two different posters; one landscape and one the traditional portriat poster. We have looked into the landscape idea because it allows us to explore different ways of seeing the posters.

Portrait

For the portrait poster we have chosen two separate types of poster. The portrait poster would be used for the major theatre poster and in magazines.

I like this version of the portrait psoter. I like the use of depth of field and focus. The single boy to the left of the shot introcudes the feel of drama, but also creates a small sense of tranquility. This poster also hints at the idea of loss, using a single isolated character against a very idealistic backdrop, but because he is out of focus it makes him seem anonymous and distant. From what I have heard from asking other people about the posters I feel that this is one of the strongest portrait posters but parts of it; like the credits at the bottom, do not look professional so they need to be changed.

This poster is very minimalist and simple. Taking the trigger of the flashback to the beach and using it as a focus point. This poster doesn't give anything away about the film, but allows for the drama genre to show. This minimalist design I think works for the genre and as a poster because it hints at the film rather than showing it. It also sets up the film to be emotional. What I want to change about it however is the white credits as I think that they show up too much agains the stone. Also I want to make the titles clearer.

Landscape

We have editied the same image to see what would work best and be the most effective. One of the best things about the image that we worked with is the isolated feel of the character and the reflections of the ligt and the coffee mug on the table. The landscape poster could be used in the theatre although this is much less likely and it would be more likely used online.

This design is good and the most basic of the landscape designs. However the one thing that I do not like about it is the use of the name 'Callum Hurley' and the design of the text. This is because it does not work because it looks too artificial, and it stands out too much on the image.

This is a slightly more edited version of the first with the 'Callum Hurley' name changes so it is a different font, slightly angled with the table and an overlay. This is a much better effect for the name. another thing changed on this image is the vignet being placed over, however this dark edged effect does not work with the image.

This is the poster with the name changed and the bottom credits moved to the side of the table. Them being on the table with an overlay and a slight angle with the table makes it seem smoother and more real.However the words can be difficult to make out because of the reflection.

In this we decided to take out the name 'Callum Hurley' from the table because it didn't fit well into the poster and stood out too much. Also the name appears in the credits, which have been angled more and placed more carefully on the table.

This Poster draft has taken inspiration from the Descendants; which shows tha mian character looking back at people on the beach. The feel that this poster gives off is that he is remembering the scene. However I think if this is going to be done  I will have to edit the background better so it looks more natural. This I will do by feathering the edges a little more to make it seem more real.

Both of these images have been taken directly from our short film and I will have to take individual photo's. Although I think that these photo's work well I think that I will have to retake the photo's similar to that we have. I am going to take, photo's of Callum sat on the sofa similar to the landscape posters

Photoshop Poster Editing

After initially using a simple text for the bottom credits on the poster I discovered that they are difficult to read becasue they do not stand out. To fix this I have added a drop shadow to the words to make them easier to read. This was done by selecting the text layer and then clicking drop shadow. Another way to do this is to copy the text and then add a gausian blur effect adn placing it behind the original.

To give the Title of the film and the 'Film by D and H' a better effect I decided to add a 'hard light' opacity filter. This is done by chaning the layer opacity to hard light. I feel that it gived the text a more ghostly/spectural feel to it.

When I transfered the credits text from the earlier poster I realised that the black on black makes them very hard to see. So the first thing I changed was the colour of the text by inverting the colours.I then removed the drop shadow as the darkness behind the text makes it uneccasary.

I then took out the socket and wires out of the wall to the right, this was because it was distracting from the focus in the centre. I used the Healing Brush tool to edit this out because it takes the colour around where you are painting and copies it. This covers the problems with the image and blends it with the background well.

However the healing tool didn't work well so I used the brush tool to copy the surrounding colour and played with the oppasity and hardness of the brush untill it covered the area I wanted.

I wanted to add a vignet which consists of a layer of colour which gets darker as it reaches the edge of the image. This effect makes the image seem less real and more dreamlike.

To make the text on the table seem as if it is actually on the table I changed the opacity to overlay, which allows the background colour to come through. This makes it look as if it is actually on the table and not just placed there

After changing the opacity I noticed that although the colour comes through it still looked artificial. I changed this by selecting the distort tool which allowed me to change the text on the X and Y so I could fit it to the camera angle by lining the edges up with the table.

Possible Poster Fonts

This font is good as it has a slightly childish look, with simple design. This is easy to see and read, while still keeping to the same style

This font doesn't fit the feel of the film to be the title, however I do like the style. Another major problem with this font is the difficulty to see the letters within.

This font is very close to the font that is at the title of 'Daddy', the ghostly image and outline of the font. The way of making this better, is by copying the image over and adding a slight blur/gausian blur to the font, which will difuse the background.

This font does not fit the style/genre of the film as it has a slightly more religious look than the short has.

I like the most of the letters in this font because they are easy to read and have a slight distortion. However the Ls and Ts of the font are too distorted and don't seem as serious of this.

This font is very similar to the 'TelevisualMan' font, which is very digital and distorted. However this digital look doesn't fit the genre of the my short film in any way, so it would be useless as the font.

This is a very good font because it has a childish look, but still has a managable look and doesn't seem to strange. This could work as the font for the 'The Absence of Life'

This is the font that we have decided to use for the actual film because it's suits the narrative and genre.

I am going to have to use more fonts to see what will fit the genre and compare them directly to other posters.

Film posters Pt 2

 Coffee Films
Silence Amplified

I like this poster as it creates a feeling of drama and annonymity, something I want to present in my film. I like the use of a single colour being chosen and amplified, I also like the use of completely blacking out the person so we cannot see him. The font in this poster is very simple and creates a feel of technology, not something I want the audience to associate with my film.


 This poster for Televisual Man is similar to that of Silence amplified. However it focuses on the characters face. I think this could have a good effect as a poster for the film as it connotes an intensity that I want to feel for my film. The font in this poster is similar to Silence Amplified but much bolder and thicker. However it doesn't fit with the genre and style of my short.

Feature film posters
The Tree (2010)

This poster shows the bright yellow lighting similar to that in the begining of the fim, during the dream sequence. However this style doesn't fit with the genre of my film. However 'The Tree' is a drama that presents a family distrought by death as they try to move on.

The Descendants (2011)

I like the style of this poster as it places certian characters in a sillouette in the distance. This could be a place to put the older brother in the scene. However the lighting in the poster is too bright to fit the genre and themes of my film.

Short film posters
I'm Here (2010)


This film narrative is very similar to mine as 'a young man faces the abrupt death of a friend'. This poster is good to take inspiration from because of the bright yellow colourisation of the image. Which initially connotes happiness, however the image of the two distorted faces of the character makes the tone more empty and meloncoly. I think the poster for this short film has great colourisation, which can create a feeling of loss and joy.

 Brotherly (2008)

This is a very close style to my film and it shows the closeness of the two characters. I do not however like the simplicity of the style, but it does show the informtation and gives an idea of the film.

Grand Cru (2010)

The artistic style of this poster as it reminda me of classic photography, however it does create a light feeling in the scene

Illegal Activity (2012)

I like the isolated feel of this shot used in the poster as the main character is alone with a feathered darkness. However this poster seems to make the character look guilty, while I want my character to be alone.

Poster Ideas:
A straight shot of the main characters with a pitch black background. Within th characters eye I will put the faded refletction of his brother or the accident infront of him.

To have the main character in the centre of a large sofa in an empty room (a shot used in the film)

I like this shot of the two main characters (younger and older brother) during a flashback. I feel that it gives a slightly relaxing and hopeful scene to the film
